O Bairro Operário de Portimão : história e património

Abstract

A Revolução Industrial marcou uma nova ordem económica e social na Europa. O afluxo de população rural às cidades, à procura de melhores condições de vida, obrigou a uma reorganização da urbe, que veio alterar substancialmente o desenho urbano e dotar as cidades de uma nova vivência social e económica. Por várias cidades europeias proliferaram bairros operários, inicialmente com condi-ções de habitabilidade muito reduzidas, abaixo do humanamente exigível, até às con-cepções de melhor qualidade, promovidas tanto por exigência legal, como por iniciativa de alguns empresários. Foram diversas as concepções de habitação operária que ao longo dos anos foram estudadas e aplicadas. Assistiu-se a uma fase de grande experimentação que criou a base para o que hoje se pratica um pouco por todo o mundo. O bairro operário de Portimão, assinalável no contexto da habitação operária em Por-tugal, foi concebido na década de 30 do século XX, ligado à indústria conserveira, emergente na cidade, nessa época. Com o decorrer dos anos foi sendo alterado em fun-ção de necessidades dos seus moradores, mas manteve a sua unidade como bairro. Neste trabalho propõe-se a musealização deste bairro, de modo a preserva-lo e a dá-lo a conhecer à população. O objectivo é marcar este espaço urbano como um testemu-nho da história da cidade, inserido num contexto que a marcou profundamente e a con-dicionou até aos dias de hoje, como factor fundamental para o seu desenvolvimento.

The Industrial Revolution marked a new social and economic order in Europe. The influx of rural populations to cities in search of better living conditions, forced the reorganization of the municipality, which substantially changed the urban design and gave it a new social and economic life. In several European towns proliferated workers neighbourhoods, initially in very poor living conditions, even below human requirements, to the conception of better quality, promoted both by legal requirements and by the initiative of some businessmen. There were different conceptions of workers housing that over the years were studied and applied. It was a time of great experimentation that created the basis for what today is practiced all over the world. The workers neighbourhood of Portimão, remarkable in the context of workers hous-ing in Portugal, was designed in the 1930s and linked to the canning industry emerging in the city at that time. Over the years it has been altered in accordance with the needs of the residents, but it has maintained its unity as a neighbourhood. In this work, it is proposed to immortalize it as a living museum, to preserve it so that the population may know of it. The aim is to make this urban space a testimony of the city's history, in a context that was profoundly conditioned, up to the present, as a key factor for its development.
