A toponímia da cidade da Guarda e a construção da memória pública no século XX

Abstract

O presente trabalho, realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Estudos do Património, da Universidade Aberta, incide sobre a toponímia da cidade da Guarda. Tendo como objectivo compreender de que modo as alterações de ordem política interferem na actualização e construção da memória pública, fez-se o levantamento dos topónimos existentes no início do século XX para, através das actas das sessões da Câmara Municipal, se identificarem, nas nomeações e renomeações das vias, os topónimos de continuidade e de ruptura com a conjuntura vigente. Caracterizado o espaço do centro histórico no início do século XX, acompanhou-se a expansão da urbe até ao ano de 1980, identificaram-se os protagonistas e os ritos usados na criação da memória pública. Através da aplicação de um questionário procurou-se saber que uso quotidiano se faz dos topónimos actuais e que memória existe sobre esse património.

This project, developed during the Masters Degree in Estudos do Património, in Universidade Aberta, focuses on the toponomy of the city of Guarda. Having the aim of understanding how political changes interfere in the updating and construction of public memory, a survey of the existing toponyms in the early twentieth century was made. Through the minutes of the City Hall meetings, it was possible to identify, in nominations and renames of the streets, the toponyms of continuity and rupture with the present situation. Having characterized the space of the early 20th century, the expansion of the city was accompanied until the year 1980 and the protagonists and the rites used in the creation of public memory were identified. Through the application of a questionnaire we tried to understand the daily use of the current toponyms and the memory that exists in what concerns to that heritage.
