Competências comunicativas em inglês língua estrangeira : fatores de sucesso : conceções de alunos e professores do ensino secundário

Abstract

A aprendizagem do Inglês Língua Estrangeira (ILE) adquire hoje em dia um papel de relevo na vida de qualquer cidadão face à necessidade sentida em utilizar esta língua para comunicar, para conquistar o mercado de trabalho ou somente para ter acesso a conteúdos e conhecimentos que estão disponíveis numa rede global onde o inglês é o código linguístico de eleição. Foi motivada por esta realidade e reconhecendo as dificuldades geralmente manifestadas pelos alunos na construção do conhecimento nesta língua estrangeira que definimos como tema do nosso estudo: Competências Comunicativas em ILE: Fatores de Sucesso – Conceções de Alunos e Professores do Ensino Secundário. Neste sentido, procurámos respostas para as seguintes questões: (i) qual a perceção dos alunos relativamente ao seu nível de competências comunicativas em ILE?; (ii) a perceção que os alunos têm do seu nível de competências comunicativas está de acordo com a avaliação atribuída pelo professor?; (iii) qual o grau de motivação dos alunos para o desenvolvimento das competências comunicativas em ILE e quais as razões que lhes estão subjacentes?; (iv) que fatores condicionam ou promovem o sucesso na aprendizagem do ILE?; (v) quais as estratégias de aprendizagem que melhor contribuem para o desenvolvimento das competências comunicativas em ILE?; (vi) como tornar o ensino do ILE mais interessante e relevante para os alunos? Para este estudo de caso realizado na Escola Secundária de Arouca durante o ano letivo de 2011/2012, recorremos à aplicação de questionários e à realização de entrevistas para recolher elementos que nos permitiram tirar ilações sobre as conceções de alunos e professores relativamente às questões supracitadas. Os resultados deste estudo dão conta das perspetivas partilhadas pelos dois grupos de inquiridos assim como das divergências encontradas. As conclusões a que chegámos poderão dar um forte contributo para futura reflexão sobre as práticas pedagógicas dos docentes e dar sugestões para estudos futuros.

The learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has nowadays acquired a prominent role in the life of any citizen because of his/her need to use this language to communicate, to enter the job market or even just for having access to information that is available in a global network where English has the position of a universal language. Inspired by these facts and recognizing the difficulties often expressed by students in foreign language acquisition, we entitled our study: Communication Skills in English as a Foreign Language: Success Factors - Learners and Teachers’ Perceptions in Secondary Education. The aims of this study are to investigate students and teachers’ conceptions on this topic by seeking answers to the following questions: (i) what is the students’ self-concept of their communication skills in EFL?; (ii) is the students’ self-concept of their communication skills consistent with the assessment provided by the teacher? (iii) what is the students’ level of motivation for the development of communication skills in EFL and which are the underlying reasons? (iv) what factors constrain or promote the success in learning EFL? (v) what are the learning strategies that best contribute to the development of communication skills in EFL? (vi) how to make the teaching of EFL more interesting and relevant to learners? This case-study research was conducted in the Secondary School of Arouca during the school year 2011/2012. Using questionnaires and interviews we were able to collect data and draw conclusions about the conceptions of both learners and teachers regarding the above issues. We also refer the perspectives shared by both groups as well as the differences encountered. These conclusions can make a strong contribution for reflection on the improvement of teaching practices and can also give suggestions for further studies.
