Expectativas dos estudantes adultos do ensino superior a distância sobre a utilização de dispositivos móveis para a aprendizagem

Abstract

Uma nova revolução tecnológica está em curso. É impossível ficar indiferente à rápida adoção dos novos dispositivos móveis. Smartphones, leitores MP3/MP4, consolas de videojogos portáteis, tablets e leitores de eBooks são os novos dispositivos eletrónicos a ter em consideração no mercado de consumo. Hoje em dia os estudantes transportam todo este manancial de tecnologia móvel, permitindo o acesso à informação a qualquer hora e em qualquer lugar, tornando-se um excelente recurso a explorar no contexto educativo. Este modelo de aprendizagem, vulgarmente conhecido por Mobile Learning (m-Learning), impõe novas mentalidades e posturas por parte dos professores e estudantes nestes contextos. O presente estudo de natureza exploratória, pretendeu estudar a utilização que os estudantes adultos fazem dos dispositivos móveis, bem como, as expectativas que têm sobre o uso dos mesmos para a aprendizagem no ensino superior a distância. Verificou-se que, na sua grande maioria, os estudantes inquiridos por questionário referem usar sobretudo computadores portáteis e telemóveis para aceder à internet, sendo reduzida a utilização de outros dispositivos móveis, tais como tablet, smartphone ou iPod. Os estudantes que utilizam a internet nos dispositivos móveis (telemóvel, tablet, smatphone, iPod) consultam essencialmente o correio eletrónico, os motores de busca e os fóruns da plataforma de aprendizagem e quanto ao local de acesso, uma vez que estamos a falar de dispositivos móveis, podem ser utilizados em qualquer lugar e a qualquer hora. Os inquiridos indicam ter grandes expectativas sobre a utilização dos dispositivos móveis para a aprendizagem, embora refiram como fator limitativo os elevados preços dos tarifários, bem como o preço elevado dos equipamentos.

A new technological revolution is underway. It is impossible to remain indifferent to the quick adherence to the new mobile device. Smartphones, MP3/MP4 players, portable videogame consoles, tablets and eBooks readers are the new electronic appliance to be taken in consideration in the market of consumption. Nowadays students carry with them all of this mobile technology paraphernalia that allows access to information anytime and anywhere, thus becoming an excellent resource to be explored in the educational context. This learning modality commonly known as Mobile Learning (m-Learning) compels teachers and students to assume a whole new mentality and attitude on the topic of these contexts. The present study of an exploratory nature intended to study the use of mobile devices by adult students, as well as their expectations in using them in higher education of distance learning. It was found that in most cases the students surveyed by the queries indicate a preference for laptops and mobile phones to access the internet and a lower usage of tablets, smartphones or iPods for the same purpose. The students that use the internet on mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, smartphones or iPods use them essentially for checking their emails, browsing search engines or the forums within the learning platform. As for accessing these services, and once we are talking about mobile devices, they can be used anytime, anywhere unlimitedly. The inquired students refer to having high expectation on the use of mobile devices for learning purposes. On the other hand they also refer to the restraining and negative aspect of high prices in both communication and equipment.
