Como o ensino vê a variação?

Abstract

Thinking about the correlations between linguistic variation and education is both necessary and urgent if we wish to make language teaching more appropriate, fairer and more meaningful. I take, on one hand, already well-established concepts derived from research on language: the variable nature of language (in space, time, situations) and the intrinsic relationship between this variation and social structure, the communicative needs of speakers, the needs and desires that speakers have to build their social identity. On the other hand, we found out that the teaching of Portuguese language has usually been based on a vision that assumes the language as a static reality. I propose to contrast the two components of this issue, to reveal where, and if, any relationship has been established, and where it is to be built. In the first instance, I seek to evaluate the bond – how one speaks about change when this issue comes to be focused; in the second, I seek the reasons for absence - ignorance or indifference?

Pensar as correlações entre variação linguística e ensino é tanto necessário quanto urgente, se desejamos tornar o ensino da língua mais adequado, mais justo e mais significativo. Parto, por um lado, de um conjunto já bem consolidado de conceitos derivados das investigações sobre a linguagem, que assumem a natureza variável das línguas (no espaço, no tempo, nas situações) e a relação intrínseca que essa variação tem com a estrutura social, com as necessidades comunicativas dos falantes, com as necessidades e desejos que os falantes têm de construir sua identidade social. Por outro lado, observamos que o ensino da língua portuguesa tem se pautado usualmente em uma visão que supõe a língua como uma realidade estática. Proponho contrapor os dois componentes dessa questão, para revelar onde se estabeleceu algum vínculo e onde ele está por construir. No primeiro caso, busco avaliar o vínculo – como se fala de variação quando se fala de variação; no segundo, busco as razões da ausência – desconhecimento ou indiferença?
