A rainha Margot em duas versões

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study concerning the novel The queen Margot (1845), by Alexandre Dumas father, and the homonymous movie (1994), by Patrice Chéreau, mainly considering its historical character, the production conditions of each “discourse” and the personages’ performances in both narratives. The novel has been originally published in the form of feuilleton in the French newspaper La presse, during the years 1844 and 1845, what explains its long extension and the correlation among the chapters. It constitutes a trilogy, the action of which takes place during the religion wars, affording to the text the classification of a traditional historical novel, having the episode of St. Bartholomew carnage as its most striking event. Regarding the movie, which has been awarded five Cesar prizes, two rewards in Cannes Festival and an indication to the Oscar for the best costume design, it also counts with Isabelle Adjani as the protagonist actress. With a few relevant differences regarding the novel, it is remarkable that the action in the movie happens in august 1572 in a Paris that is the center of conflicts among Catholics and Protestants. In this scenery, the comparison between the two artistic manifestations is based strictly on the analysis of the personages’ profiles, the circumstances in which they have been produced and the historical aspects surrounding the two works.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar um estudo comparativo entre o romance La reine Margot (1845), de Alexandre Dumas père, e o filme homônimo (1994), de Patrice Chéreau, a partir, sobretudo, da consideração de seu caráter histórico, das condições de produção de cada “discurso” e da atuação das personagens em ambas as narrativas. O romance foi originalmente publicado sob a forma de folhetim no jornal francês La presse, durante os anos de 1844 e 1845, o que explica a sua longa extensão e outros traços como o “gancho” entre os capítulos. Ele constitui-se de uma trilogia cuja ação se desenrola durante as guerras de religião, o que lhe garante, dentre outros aspectos genéricos típicos, a classificação como um romance histórico tradicional, tendo o episódio do Massacre de São Bartolomeu como o fato que lhe é mais marcante. Quanto ao filme, que foi merecedor de cinco prêmios César, de dois prêmios no Festival de Cannes e de uma indicação ao Oscar de melhor figurino, tem a atriz Isabelle Adjani no papel de protagonista. Com algumas diferenças relevantes em relação ao romance, observa-se que a ação do filme se passa de agosto de 1572 até 1574 numa Paris que é o alvo da ebulição que caracterizou os conflitos entre os católicos e os protestantes. Desse modo, a comparação entre as duas linguagens artísticas se deterá no estudo do perfil das personagens, das circunstâncias em que foram produzidas e da conformação histórica que lhes é característica.
