- Dentre as igrejas construídas na densa malha urbana da antiga capital, esta se destaca por possuir um adro fechado – galilé -, local defronte do qual havia em 1740 um oratório para N.Sra. da Lapa dos Mascates. A beleza desta igreja se deve a diversos fatores: a exata colocação da torre única neoclássica ao final da rua que a emoldura; a luz intensa que jorra sobre a ornamentação tornando-a mais ampla; a combinação dos elementos arquitetônicos em um pequeno espaço com os arcos plenos formando a galilé, acima, janelas coloniais e relevos na frontaria com pedra de lioz; triângulo frontão clássico; volutas barrocas com perfis de santos – Adriano, Bernardo nos nichos e Félix , João da Mata acima - e coruchéus à maneira de Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598- 1680), colocados em 1869 por Antônio de Pádua. Internamente mais surpresas: o espaço elíptico amplia a graciosa cúpula que eleva o olhar até o pequeno lanternim. A profundidade da capela-mor cria um contraponto direcional até o retábulo com duplo coroamento enfatizado pela seqüência de fontes de luzes advindas das alturas dos lanternins e tribunas.
- Teve seu início em 1747, em que parte da cúpula foi danificada por bombardeio na revolta da Marinha, em 1893. A ornamentação da talha terminada em 1771 foi restaurada por Antônio de Pádua e Castro em 1897, os estuques na nave são de Antônio Alves Meira e as pinturas de Francisco Luis Garcia Sanches, realizadas na segunda metade do século XIX. - Among the churches built in the federal capital’s dense urban layout, this one is unique for having an enclosed churchyard – galilee -, in front of which there was a shrine to N.Srª. da Lapa dos Mascates in 1740. Its beauty is due to different factors: the scenographic placement of the single, neoclassical tower at the end of the street that frames it, bright light that washes over the decoration and the mixture of architectural elements in a small space with jack arches forming a galilee. Visual resources continue in the colonial windows and in the reliefs on the lias stone frontispiece, the classic triangular pediment, baroque volutes with the profiles of saints – Adriano and Bernardo in the niches and Félix and João da Mata above – and spires in the style of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598- 1680), placed in 1869 by Antônio de Pádua. The complexity in the building of this example is seen as much in the two cupolas in the nave, one on top of the other, of an elliptical form, and barreled main chapel, as in the lanterns and four side oculus. Going in there are more surprises: the elliptical space enlarges the graceful cupola, leading the eye up to the small lantern, reminded once again of the Berniniano preciosity of the tiny church of Sant’Andrea al Quirinale (1658) in Roma; The depth of the main chapel creates a counterpoint towards the retable with a double coping, emphasized by the sequences of light that come from the lanterns and tribunes above. The woodcarving decorations were finished in 1771 and restored by Antônio de Pádua e Castro in 1897; the stucco in the nave is by Antônio Alves Meira; and the paintings are by Francisco Luis Garcia Sanches, realized in the second half of the 19th century XIX. Due to its spatial elasticity, mixing checkered spaces in a delicate way, this parsonage is a jewel encased in what remains of the beauty of Rio de Janeiro’s colonial times.
