Title:
La Nina brings warm waters, rain to southwest Pacific: part 1
Author(s):
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Language:
eng
Description:
  • The strong equatorial winds associated with La Niña effectively push warmer waters westward across the Pacific, resulting in the conditions seen in this image. Shown here is a comparison of sea surface temperatures from December 28, 2010 to the 1971-2000 average temperatures. Areas that are blue are cooler than normal; areas that are red are warmer than normal. The La Niña's characteristic tongue of cooler than average water that stretches across the equatorial Pacific can be seen in the top right of the image
