Extrato hidroalcoólico de Punica granatum Linn. sobre Staphylococcus spp. isolado de leite bovino

Abstract

Mastitis is characterized by mammary inflammation in response to bacterial infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of pomegranate extract on Staphylococcus spp. The milk samples were plated and the colonies were adjusted to 1.0 x106 UFC.mL-1 to Standard no. 6 McFarland scale. The sensitivity of the isolates was determined by disk diffusion and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by the halo of inhibition greater than 15 mm. The extracts were evaluated by ANOVA and Tukey test 5%. Additionally it was evaluated antioxidant activity, levels of total phenols and flavonoids. The bacterial growth was inhibited and the antioxidant activity was observed from 50 μg.mL-1. However, it was not possible to correlate this activity to the levels of total phenols and flavonoids, probably other substances were responsible for antioxidant activity. It was concluded that the hydroalcoholic extract of pomegranate has antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus spp.

Mastite é caraterizada por inflamação mamária em resposta à infecção bacteriana. Objetivou-se verificar ação antibacteriana do extrato de romã sobre sobre Staphylococcus spp. Amostras de leite foram semeadas e as colônias ajustadas a 1,0x106 UFC.mL-1 ao padrão nº 6 da escala de MacFarland. A sensibilidade dos isolados foi determinada por difusão em discos e a concentração inibitória mínima foi determinada pelo halo de inibição superior a 15 mm. Os extratos foram avaliados pelo método ANOVA e teste de Tukey 5%. Adicionalmente avaliou-se atividade antioxidante, teores de fenóis e flavonoides totais. O crescimento bacteriano foi inibido e a ação antioxidante foi verificada a partir de 50 μg.mL-1. Porém, não foi possível correlacionar esta atividade aos teores de fenóis e flavonoides totais, provavelmente outras substâncias presentes foram responsáveis pela ação antioxidante. Conclui-se que o extrato hidroalcoólico de romã apresenta atividade antimicrobiana contra Staphylococcus spp.
