A tatuagem é um fenômeno presente em todas as camadas sociais, com ampla inserção em todos os grupos etários e tem sua motivação comumente relacionada ao prazer estético, à beleza corporal e ao interesse por arte. Estas referências, entretanto, são insuficientes para compreendermos o lado B da experiência: os pesadelos, as tentativas de apagamento e a compulsão presente na preocupação com parar de tatuar-se.
