Uma cartografia do envelhecimento na contemporaneidade: a velhice e a terceira idade

Abstract

Desde a década de 50, pesquisas e estatísticas têm apontado o crescente envelhecimento da população mundial. O aumento do número de idosos, a partir de então, irrompeu no cenário das preocupações sociais. É em meados do século XX que a velhice passa a ter maior visibilidade no cenário brasileiro, sendo tomada como objeto de diversas áreas do conhecimento, do Estado e de investimento do mercado capitalista. Nosso objetivo, a partir de levantamento bibliográfico sobre o tema e de nossa experiência com grupos de terceira idade, é analisar a emergência da velhice como categoria de gestão, que se vale de políticas públicas e das ciências do envelhecimento para ditar modos de ser e viver essa fase da vida, sobretudo, criando e difundindo o conceito de terceira idade. A aliança entre o Estado e a medicina no Brasil propiciou a construção de novos procedimentos para a velhice, fundada num projeto de prevenção ao envelhecimento e na difusão de um ideário de ancianidade baseado numa pedagogia que incita a produção de corpos saudáveis e rentáveis ao capitalismo. Dessa forma, os estigmas e as práticas de invalidação da velhice cedem lugar para tentativas de representá-la como um período da vida que pode comportar atividades produtivas, realização de projetos e participação ativa no mercado de consumo. A gestão do envelhecimento na atualidade se caracteriza na promoção de diversos programas para a terceira idade que, além de funcionar como controle social da população que envelhece, contribui para a propagação de um ideal de envelhecimento que enrijece outras possibilidades de vivência da velhice.

Since the 50's, research and statistics have pointed the increasing aging of the world-wide population. The increased number of elders, from now on, burst in the scene of the social concerns. It is in the middle of the XX century that the elders starts to have greater visibility in the Brazilian scene, being taken as an object of diverse areas by which it is known to the State and the investment of the capitalist market. Our objective, from bibliographical survey on the subject and of our experience with groups of the third age, is to analyze the emergency of the elderly as a category of management, that counts on public politics and sciences of the aging to dictate ways of being and living in this phase of life, over all, creating and spreading out the concept of third age. The alliance between the State and medicine in Brazil propelled the construction of new procedures for the elders, established in a project of prevention to those aging and in the diffusion of an ideal of old age based on a study that stirs up the production of a healthy body, that helps on the income of capitalism. In this form, the stigmata and the practicess of invalidation of the elderly yield place for attempts to represent it as a period of life that can hold productive activities, accomplishment of projects, and active participation in the consumption market. The period of aging in present time, characterizes in the promotion of diverse programs for the third age that, beyond functioning as social control of the population that ages, contributes for the increasing number of an aging ideal that hardens other possibilities of experience of the elderly.
