O elogio da insubmissão : a condição feminina em O último cais, de Helena Marques

Abstract

A condição feminina é um tema que assume especial destaque em todas as narrativas da autoria de Helena Marques, independentemente da época histórica que recriam. O romance O Último Cais, cuja acção decorre no Funchal em finais do século XIX, apresenta um grupo heterogéneo de mulheres de diferentes gerações. O presente trabalho debruça-se sobre as manifestações do feminino em O Último Cais, com especial incidência nas personagens, que se impõem pela verosimilhança e consistência da sua construção. Começa por explorar a dimensão documental do romance, caracterizando, à luz da História, a situação da mulher na sociedade da época, nos espaços públicos e privados. Procede depois ao estudo das principais personagens femininas, destacando alguns traços das suas personalidades e esboçando o seu percurso de vida. Reflecte, finalmente, sobre diversos aspectos relacionados com a instância narradora, também ela marcada por uma visão feminina. Perante uma sociedade conservadora e moralista, em que são geralmente tratadas como seres inferiores, as mulheres vêem-se obrigadas a escolher entre duas atitudes possíveis: a resignação ou a rebeldia. As mulheres resignadas e passivas submetem-se às regras que lhes são impostas, abdicando da sua identidade e autonomia. As mulheres rebeldes e insubmissas afirmam a sua personalidade, contestam as normas sociais e lutam pela realização dos seus projectos de vida. As personagens femininas que mais se destacam no universo diegético são as insubmissas. Fortes e determinadas, desprezam as convenções e, assim, contribuem activamente para a evolução das mentalidades. O romance pode ser lido, portanto, como o elogio das mulheres lutadoras e irreverentes – o elogio da insubmissão.

The feminine condition is a subject that assumes a special relevance in all of Helena Marques narratives, apart from the recreated historical epoch. The novel O Último Cais, whose action takes place in the end of the nineteenth century in Funchal, shows a diverse group of women belonging to different generations. This work focuses on the manifestation of the feminine in O Último Cais, with especial relevance on the characters that impose themselves by the plausibility and consistence of their construction. It starts by exploring the documentary dimension of the romance by characterising historically women’s situation in that time’s society, in public and private spaces. Then it continues with the study of the main female characters, commenting on some of the features of their personality and showing their life path. Finally, it reflects upon several aspects related to the narrative instance which is also marked by a feminine point of view. Facing a conservative and moralizing society, in which they are generally treated like inferior beings, women see themselves forced to choose between two possible attitudes: resignation or rebellion. Submissive and passive women lay down their arms to imposed rules, abdicating from their identity and autonomy. The rebellious and assertive women affirm their personality by standing up to the rules imposed by society and fighting in order to accomplish their life projects. The most upstanding female characters in the universe of the narratives are the defiant ones. Those who are strong and determined despise conventions, thus actively contributing to the evolution of mentalities. Therefore, the romance can be interpreted as a compliment to the irreverent and powerful women – the compliment of rebelliousness.
