Por terras de Vera Cruz : os olhares do experienciado : Caminha, Mestre João e piloto anónimo

Abstract

A nove de março do ano de 1500, saía do Restelo, em Lisboa, uma armada de treze velas. O capitão-mor era Pedro Álvares Cabral e esta tratava-se da segunda viagem marí-tima rumo à India. Durante o seu percurso tiveram vista de uma terra nova, desconhecida aos olhos do mundo e à qual o capitão deu o nome de Vera Cruz. Deste encontro ficaram três olhares que revelam o que se viu, pensou e sentiu e é em busca dessa visão sobre o novo mundo que vamos neste nosso trabalho. Pêro Vaz de Caminha, Mestre João e piloto anónimo são as testemunhas oculares desse encontro. Procuramos, pelos escritos de via-gem que nos deixaram, o traço individual dos seus depoimentos no encontro dos mundos e a sua forma de construir a novidade e de descrever o outro. Mas o nosso trabalho pretende igualmente alcançar outros olhares que, num outro tempo, cruzaram o mesmo espaço. A nossa escolha recai nas crónicas da Expansão, pela função que tinham em narrar os feitos dos portugueses no espaço extraeuropeu e, por isso, contar a verdade dos factos. Aqui iremos em busca das semelhanças e das divergências do olhar em Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros, e Gaspar Correia, tendo sempre a novidade como vetor descritivo. É pois pelos olhares do experienciado que se vislumbram as histórias individuais e a História coletiva e é por isso que na nossa viagem procuraremos acompanhar estes homens à luz do nosso tempo, tentando redescobrir o seu.

March 9th of 1500, departure from Restelo, in Lisbon, a fleet of thirteen sails. The General Captain was Pedro Álvares Cabral and this was the second sea voyage towards India. During the course a new land had been seen, unknown to the world, to which the captain named land of Vera Cruz. Of this encounter three perspectives remained which reveal what was seen, thought and felt and it is in the pursuit of this vision of the new world that we go in our work. Pêro Vaz de Caminha, Mestre João and the anonymous pilot are the eyewitnesses of this encounter. We search, through the texts they left us about the travel, the individual trait of their testimony at the encounter of worlds and their way of building the novelty and describe the other. But our work is also intended to achieve other perspectives that, in another time, crossed the same space. Our choice lies in the chronicles of the Expansion, by the function they had in narrating the deeds of the Portuguese in the extra-european space and therefore tell the truth of the facts. Here we will be in search of similarities and differences in the look of Castanheda Lopes, João de Barros, and Gaspar Correia, always taking the new as the descriptive vector. It is thus by the eyes of the experienced that we envision the individual stories as well as the collective History and that is why in our journey we try to follow these men at the light of our time, trying to rediscover theirs.
