Visões do resgate financeiro de Portugal em 2011 na imprensa diária generalista portuguesa

Abstract

Vinte e cinco anos depois de Portugal ter integrado a União Europeia, num contexto de crise económica internacional, surge a intervenção do FMI em Portugal. Este é o terceiro pedido de resgate financeiro do país, desde o fim da ditadura, mas o primeiro feito em contexto da Europa de Schengen, da moeda única, da integração. Num país com elevada taxa de abstenção eleitoral, num mundo onde os jornais perdem leitores diariamente e onde a Internet ganha terreno face à imprensa escrita, dita tradicional, fizemos um estudo exploratório de como a imprensa nacional generalista abordou a chegada da ajuda externa internacional a Portugal. Comparámos três dos principais diários generalistas, em relação ao layout, ao conteúdo e à postura dos próprios jornais, durante os meses de março, abril e maio de 2011. Escolhemos o diário com maior tiragem – Correio da Manhã e os dois jornais que são considerados diários de referência: Público e Diário de Notícias. Sempre norteados pelo princípio de que os jornais ainda desempenham a sua dupla função de espelho da realidade e da construção social, por um lado, e, por outro, como fonte de informação e construção da opinião pública, concluímos que o fizeram em quatro grandes linhas de ação: tornando a crise um assunto diário e de destaque; introduzindo a Economia como tema de jornais generalistas; assumindo uma rutura com a União Europeia pela primeira vez e introduzindo uma linguagem económica na vida quotidiana dos cidadãos.

Twenty five years after the integration of Portugal into the European Union, on a broader context of international economic crisis, comes International Monetary Fund – IMF’s intervention in Portugal. It is the third financial bailout, since the end of the dictatorial regime, but the first one that occurs in the context of Schengen’s Europe, the single currency, the integration. In a country with a high rate of electoral abstention, in a world where newspapers lose readers on a daily basis and where internet is winning compared to print media, we did an exploratory data analysis on how national print media covered the issue of the international financial aid. In order to do so, we compared three main generalist printed daily newspapers , regarding layout, content and the posture of the newspapers, during the months of march, april and may 2011. The choice of the newspapers obeyed some criteria, so we chose the daily newspaper with a bigger circulation – Correio da Manhã (tabloid) and the “quality press”, the daily newspapers Público and Diário de Notícias. This analysis was guided under the concept that newspapers are still able to perform their double mission of showing reality and social construction, on one side. And on the other side, that they are a prime source of information for the public and that they work in the construction of public opinion, allowing us to conclude that they did it by pursuing four lines of action: transforming the crisis into a daily business; introducing the economy as an issue for generalist newspapers; coming forward with a rupture about EU for the first time and introducing economic therms into the common people’s daily lives.
