Uma vila que gravita em redor de uma instituição assistêncial: a recuperação do património urbanístico do Hospital das Caldas até 1533

Abstract

Resumo - Esta dissertação tenta reconstituir várias fases do desenvolvimento urbanístico da vila atendendo, antes de mais, à morfologia do terreno, consistência geológica, topografia e orografia. Exploramos na documentação conhecida as pré-existências no local, com especial atenção para os poucos estudados ecos documentais sobre a utilização das termas do sítio das Caldas de Óbidos durante o período medieval. É o modo moderno do pensar a doença nos conceitos de caridade e misericórdia tão importante para a D. Leonor, que criará as bases de sustentabilidade da nova vila. As Caldas servem de cadinho de experiências urbanas para a Rainha pôr em prática o seu entendimento da assistência médica e social, colocando em evidência, no centro de uma vila, o edifício médico normalmente repudiado para o subúrbio. Será talvez este o maior legado e a originalidade dos primeiros anos da vila das Caldas, património implícito que importa preservar. Já o povo, ainda não embuído da capacidade de aceitar os enfermos no seu seio, demonstrará alguma resistência à ocupação do local, e só a promessa de privilégios e liberdades irá garantir que, trinta anos depois, existisse uma povoação de pelo menos uma centena de famílias, economicamente dependentes da Instituição central da vila. Assim, pelo menos no período em estudo era ténue a fronteira entre o Hospital e a vila. O mesmo se poderá dizer do termo, pois este não era mais que o conjunto de propriedades rústicas do aro peri-urbano de maior influência do Hospital. Urge a preservação da memória fundacional da vila, reconstituindo o seu mote, as razões que levaram ao seu desenvolvimento e, no fundo, ao necessário reconhecimento do Hospital como elemento agregador de gentes e vontades, para um futuro em que a balneoterapia nas Caldas seja novamente sustentável. Pois a manutenção deste património que nos resta, quase só uma saudade colectiva, um reconhecimento efémero no nome e nos cartazes turísticos, simplesmente será possível com o uso dessas águas ao redor das quais se fez uma vila

Abstract - This dissertation tries to rebuild the various phases of the urban development of the town, having in consideration, above everything, the ground’s morphology, geological consistency, topography and orography. We explore in the known documentation the previous existences at the place, with special attention given to the poorly studied existing documents about the usage of the baths of Caldas de Óbidos during the medieval period. The modern way of thinking about the diseases of the concepts of charity and mercy is so important to D. Leonor, that it will constitute the basis for the sustainability of the new town. The town of Caldas will be used by the queen to experiment the applicability of her ideas about social and medical assistance, choosing the centre of the town to build the medical facilities usually located in the suburbs, and thus, giving it evidence. This might be the biggest legacy and the origin of the town of Caldas’ first years, an implicit inheritance that is important to preserve. The people, not yet capable of accepting the ill amongst them, will show some resistance to the occupation of the place, and only the promise of rights and liberties will make possible, thirty years later, the existence of a settlement of at least a hundred families, depending economically of the main Institution of the town. Thus, at least during the period of our study, there was a thin line between the Hospital and the town. The same may be said about the town limits, because it was nothing more than the group of rustic properties of the most influent urban perimeter around the Hospital. It’s urgent to preserve the memory of the town’s foundation, restoring its motto, the reasons that lead to its development and recognizing the Hospital as the motive of the reunion of people and wills, in order to allow the sustainability of the baths in the future of the city of Caldas. To preserve the existing inheritance, almost a collective «saudade», a momentary remembrance through the name and the advertising posters for tourists, is possible only by using the waters around which a town was built
