Escritos de Mary Dascomb: a atuação educacional feminina inupta no projeto presbiteriano do Brasil

Abstract

O objetivo de nossa tese de doutorado em Educação é conhecer e estudar a trajetória de Mary Dascomb, primeira missionária da missão presbiteriana no Brasil, educadora, gestora, solteira, que a partir da segunda metade do século XIX até o início do século XX, dedicou-se ao projeto educacional das Escolas Americanas no Brasil. O conhecimento historiográfico sobre a participação das mulheres no cenário educacional ganha ênfase nos debates contemporâneos. Entretanto, poucos são os estudos que levam em consideração as possíveis contribuições das mulheres religiosas, solteiras ou casadas, nessa discussão. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo problematiza a presença do gênero feminino no projeto educacional presbiteriano implantado no Brasil a partir do final do século XIX. As fontes utilizadas na investigação foram as “escritas de si”, enviadas por Mary Dascomb ao também educador Horace Lane, bem como relatórios da Missão e da Secretária de Educação do Paraná. As cartas foram escritas pela missionária e educadora norte-americana Mary Dascomb entre 1886 e 1912. Por meio de levantamentos teóricos pautados na perspectiva da História Cultural e de Gênero, discutimos os processos de construção dos mecanismos simbólicos de poder acionados pelo discurso religioso no processo de normalização do gênero feminino, e possíveis formas de transgressão ao esperado socialmente para mulheres inuptas. Por conseguinte, analisamos a influência do modelo educacional presbiteriano norte-americano na construção da sociedade brasileira da época, principalmente no que se refere à atuação das mulheres perante a educação, ao lar e à religião.

The goal of our doctoral thesis in education is to know and study the trajectory of Mary Dascomb, first single woman sent to Brazil for the mission of the Presbyterian Church to work effectively in the educational institution project, organizing, managing and teaching in American Schools of São Paulo , capital and countryside and Curitiba, in Parana, from the second half of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The historiographical knowledge about women's participation in the educational setting gains emphasis on contemporary debates. However, there are few studies that take into account the possible contributions of religious, single or married women in this discussion. This study discusses the inupta female presence in the Presbyterian educational project implemented in Brazil and its intentions. The sources used in the research were "written to you", sent by Mary Dascomb also the educator Horace Lane, as well as reports of the Mission and the Secretary of Education of Paraná. The letters were written by the missionary and American educator Mary Dascomb between 1886 and 1912. Through theoretical surveys guided by the perspective of Cultural History and Gender, we discussed the construction processes of symbolic mechanisms of power triggered by the religious discourse in the process of normalization of the female, and possible forms of violation of the socially expected to inuptas women. Therefore, we analyzed the influence of the American Presbyterian educational model in the construction of Brazilian society at the time, especially with regard to women's role before the education, home and religion.
