The study aimed to evaluate lung maturity of goat kids using Clements test, cytologic analysis through Nile Blue and Shorr staining, and lamellar body count from the amniotic fluid of goat does. In addition, evaluation of Apgar score, vital parameters, blood glucose and lactate, blood gas parameters, cortisol, hemoglobin and packed cell volume, as well as radiographic findings of full-term and premature goat kids were carried out in order to obtain a complete assessment of the degree of lung maturity of these animals. Forty-four animals (20 does and 24 kids) were enrolled in the study and divided into three groups: Group I: constituted by eight does with 149 days of gestation, and eight kids delivered by cesarean section; Group II: constituted by six does with 143 days of gestation, and eight kids delivered by cesarean section; and Group III: constituted by six does with 143 days of gestation, which received intramuscular dexamethasone (20mg/doe) 36 hours prior to elective cesarean section, and their eight kids. It was observed that the staining of cytological Shorr, as well as the a count of lamellar bodies found to be effective diagnostic tools for assessing the lung maturity in goats neonates. While the shake test modified in this study showed a high rate of inconclusive results. The clinical-laboratory tests showed that the animals in this study were perfectly adapted to the 48 hours of life, in half extrauterino. Goats with gestational age of 143 days are perfectly feasible, contrary to the reports of some authors. Maternal treatment with dexamethasone did not show significant results in relation to fetal maturity in goats in this study.en
