Os best-sellers em Portugal : a perspectiva dos leitores de O Codex 632

Abstract

Esta dissertação teve como objectivo reflectir sobre o panorama literário actual,em particular sobre o livro, a leitura e o leitor enquanto elementos de um circuito de consumo planeado, assente na supremacia da indústria editorial e do marketing sobre a arte. Tratou-se de procurar compreender o fenómeno dos best-sellers, no contexto português, e as causas que subjazem ao respectivo sucesso. Para tal, procedeu-se, quer à leitura analítica e crítica do romance O Codex 632, de José Rodrigues dos Santos, quer à auscultação do parecer de leitores empíricos. Para além da descrição e interpretação da narrativa e das opiniões dos informantes sobre a mesma, a pesquisa contemplou uma análise evolutiva da complexidade e heterogeneidade do sistema literário. Partiu-se do conceito nuclear de cânone, com a finalidade de chegar à distinção literatura canonizada, literatura não canonizada e aos traços que caracterizam esta última. Passouse não só pela inventariação das diferentes expressões que servem para classificar os produtos não aceites pelos especialistas, tais como “literaturas marginais”, “paraliteratura”, “contraliteratura” ou “literatura de massas”, mas também pela observação das variações semânticas que lhes estão inerentes. Deu-se especial atenção ao percurso de valorização do romance ao longo da História e ao aparecimento, crescimento e separação daqueles que constituem os apelidados géneros paraliterários da actualidade. Finalmente, concluiu-se estar o êxito de vendas de romances como O Codex 632 intimamente relacionado com diversos factores de entre os quais sobressaem, neste caso particular, a temática de pendor histórico e nacional aliada à investigação do foro policial; a intriga marcada pelo entrecruzamento de núcleos temáticos que ora apelam à acção e à aventura, ora captam as emoções mais profundas; a manutenção de um estado constante de suspense e de expectativa crescente; o ritmo dinâmico, torrencial, próximo do thriller cinematográfico; a linguagem corrente, quase desprovida de recursos estilísticos. Em suma, a sobrevalorização do conteúdo e da organização do mesmo, em detrimento da forma e do estilo.

In this thesis we meditated about the actual literary scene, specially about books,reading and readers as a part of a planned consumption’s circuit, based on the supremacy of editorial industry and marketing towards art. We tried to understand the best-seller’s phenomenon, in the Portuguese context, and the reasons behind this success. On this purpose, we read and analysed the novel Codex 632, written by José Rodrigues dos Santos and we heard the opinion of empirical readers. Besides the description and analysis of the novel and of the readers’ opinions, the research included an evolutionary study about the complexity and the assortment of the literary system. We started from the main concept of canon having the goal of reaching the distinction between canonized literature and non canonized literature and to the characteristics of the last one. We not only listed the different expressions able to classify the products the specialists do not accept, such as “marginal literature”, “paraliterature”, “contraliterature” or “masses’ literature”, but also observed their semantic changes. We gave special attention to the growth of novel during History and to the development of the called paraliterary genres of the present times. At last, we concluded that the success of novels such as Codex 632 is closely related to different reasons, for instance, in this particular case, the historical and nacional subject, connected to criminal investigation; the plot crossing subjects that appeal to action and adventure or to the deepest emotions; the condition of suspense and the rising curiosity; the rhythm, next to the thriller; the language. On the whole, the great value given to the content and its organisation to the detriment of shape and style.
